Well, this explains a few things.
In light of what's shaping up to be decent-sized migration for this year's Iowa-Minnesota game, I've been doing a little research ...
I've long been puzzled by the un-gopherness of Goldie the Gopher, the UM Mascot known for his uncanny ability to spin his head 360 degrees without apparent damage to himself. I'd always called him a chipmunk. Well, it turns out the truth is, and actually has been, out there for quite some time: Goldie really is a chipmunk!
Shrewd investigative journalists have uncovered the truth in the past, but what amazed me even more is that the UM freely admits that, apparently, in 1940 no one in charge actually knew what a gopher looked like.
Granted, we're the Hawkeyes and we have chosen to go with the Hawks instead, but at least we know what a hawk is supposed to look like and haven't modeled our cartoonish mascots on a sparrow. Sheesh.
Time to head north and kick some chipmunk behind.
