Grand Nagus
Zek was originally scheduled for
release with the second assortment of
Deep Space Nine figures. Early
advertisments featured him as well as
numerous other characters from the
series. As previously discussed here,
Playmates tends to release assortments
of figures in "waves" containing
approximately six figures each.
Playmates decision to combine all of
their Star Trek action figure lines
into one line hit the Deep Space Nine
figures after the first couple of waves
of this assortment had been released.
As a result, all of the figures that
had not yet been released for the
second DS9 assortment were assimilated
into the first assortment for the
combined line. This resulted in a
delayed release for a number of these
figures, including Zek. Eventually, all
of these figures saw the light of day
in general release. My figure was
purchased at the Wal-Mart in
Independence, IA.
The Grand
Nagus features a decent likeness of the
character and fairly detailed
sculpting, but I suspect the final
paint job was not as elaborate as
originally planned. Unopened, the
figure will now fetch an average of
$9.00 on the secondary market. Opened
and intact, it will average $3.00. Zek
features standard articulation at the
neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, waist,
hips and knees. As with all of the
figures intended to be (or released as)
a part of the second assortment of DS9
figures, the figure includes a "Space
Cap" (pog) as a pack-in
premium.
Zek has yet
to be reused in any way, shape or form
by Playmates and remains quite lonely
waiting for his manservant, his wife
(Quark's mother), Brunt from the FCA,
or any other bit Ferengi (or related)
character to be produced by Playmates.
Quark, Rom, plastic-one-piece-Nog, and
the Next Generation Ferengi with the
huge hands are little comfort to
him.
