The Officiant
November 28, 2005, 11:42:31 AM by Dave

Who was that fellow who married you? Where did he get that great stole? Have 230,000 Barnes and Noble employees really gotten married to each other? Is Dave really such a crybaby and did Phoebe really stalk Dave?

Jim Bernard (sometimes referred to as the Bricker) is one of our dearest friends, who kindly consented to perform our marriage ceremony. Jim was there at the beginning of our relationship, full of support and his characteristic enthusiasm. He and his wife are models for us of how to be good partners, parents, and friends. Since Jim’s a great writer we knew he’d do us proud and indeed he did. The text of his remarks can be found here.

The spectacular stole he wore was made by Phoebe’s mom, who also made the gorgeous quilt that was on the gift table.

Hyperbole aside, we are the eleventh couple to meet at the Edina Barnes and Noble and marry, and there’s a twelfth who got engaged this summer.

Yep. sniff.

Not really.
The Maid of Honor
November 28, 2005, 11:40:11 AM by Dave

Who was Phoebe’s Maid of Honor? Is she single? Who was she wearing? Was that a real tattoo?

Sarah Egbers is one of Phoebe’s oldest and dearest friends. They roomed together years ago at the College of Saint Benedict and more recently here in Minnepolis.

And sorry, fellows, the wedding was probably your last chance. Sarah herself got married this summer too, shortly after us, and is now Ms. Sarah Paper. Wasting no time, she is also now pregnant and constantly encouraging Phoebe to join her.

Don’t you mean whom was she wearing? Ha ha ha!
Vera Wang. ooh la la!

Indeed!
The Best Man
November 28, 2005, 11:36:40 AM by Dave

Who was Dave’s Best Man? I loved the trombone solo! What was up with that?

Bill Paarmann is my best friend. I have known him since we were both in the Hawkeye Marching Band together as undergrads at the University of Iowa.

Beyond that we share the bond of superfluous letters in our last names.

We both played trombone in the band (one of us well—guess who) and so I asked Bill if he would do us the great honor of playing our recessional. He consented and even went so far as to whip up his own special arrangement of Blue Skies just for the occasion.

I love Bill Paarmann.

Did I mention that's he's also our webmaster?
The Flower Girl and Ring Bearer
November 28, 2005, 11:34:47 AM by Dave

Who was the Flower Girl? Who was that adorable Ring Bearer? Why was he wearing a kilt? Are you related to either of them?

The Flower Girl was my lovely niece, Sabrina. Her daddy, Doug, is the brother to whom I gave a kidney last year. You may have been ushered in by him. They live in Michigan. Wasn’t she adorable?

Charlie is a little boy whom Phoebe has baby-sat pretty much since he was born. She has worked for his parents, Simon and Liz, for years and they’re great people. I always marvel at what a great bond Phoebe has with Charlie, and with his little brother Liam. Simon is from Scotland, so Charlie wore his father’s childhood kilt. And did a great job!
The Readers
November 28, 2005, 11:32:54 AM by Dave

Who did your readings? What were the poems?

In order of appearance:

Linda Shea roomed with Phoebe at the College of Saint Benedict and has remained one of her best friends. She and her husband Pete, having gone through all this fairly recently, helped us out a ton with our wedding planning, answered lots of questions, and even hosted one of our showers. Linda read Christina Rosetti’s A Birthday.

Suzanne Meredith is one of our best friends, an emotional rock and lodestone. She’s also one of the best writers and readers we know. If you love books you should check out her book blog. It’s great. She is also the wife of the Bricker. Suz read Thomas Campion’s My Sweetest Lesbia, an adaptation of Catullus’s (arguably) most famous poem, vivamus mea Lesbia atque amemus. Quit snickering!

Patrick Duff is a great friend and poker buddy from Dave’s time at the Roseville Barnes and Noble. (No, not Har Mar, the little one.) O, would that he and his wonderful girlfriend Suzi hadn’t moved to faraway Seattle! How we miss them. Pat masterfully read Edward Lear’s The Owl and the Pussycat. Now I know you’re snickering. Stop it!
The Music
November 28, 2005, 11:29:43 AM by Dave

I loved the music at your wedding! Who was that playing? Do they have any CD’s/upcoming gigs? What were those songs? And that DJ! I thought his voice sounded familiar.

Probably the most common specific comment we get about our wedding is how great the music was, both live and recorded.

The live music was beautifully arranged and performed by a great friend of Phoebe’s, Chriss Mester. (No, that’s not a typo.) Maybe you noticed him and me scrupulously avoiding eye contact with one another during the ceremony. We each wanted to get through it with as little crying as possible. He was ably joined by Mark Schirmacher. Chriss and Mark have been in a band together since high school. Man, can they harmonize. After a long hiatus the Immigrants have recently reformed and play the occasional gig around the Twin Cities. Every once in a while they update their blog to announce upcoming shows, so you’ll want to check there if you’re interested. No CD’s, I’m sad to report, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.

The trombone component, of course, was handled by Bill Paarmann.

Picking out the songs was one of the funnest parts of the planning process: finding those special songs that mean so much, that communicate your feelings, and tell part of your story. Of course it was daunting knowing that there would be some real music people in the audience! Those of you with iTunes can pick up some of the songs at this iMix. (If you have trouble with the link just go to iTunes, follow the iMix link and search for Phoebe and Dave.) Most of the ceremony songs are there, and a selection from the reception. Sadly not everything is available, but if what you want isn’t, I could probably hook you up.

The fantastic DJ was none other than Chuck Tomlinson. If his voice was familiar perhaps you were a listener of Cosmic Slop the long-running and now sadly defunct radio show on Radio K, of which he was a co-host. O how I miss that show! Chuck has a great website that really lets you know what you’re getting: a smart, quirky DJ who has more than the Macarena up his sleeve. He worked with us to make sure the evening really reflected who we are. Lots of what you heard was suggested by us, but Chuck brought in a lot of songs that we never would have expected and that fit in brilliantly. Just look at how he packed that dance floor! That’s a professional.
Doctor Demento
November 28, 2005, 11:24:07 AM by Dave

Was that really Doctor Demento? Really? No way! How did you manage to have him there? How cool was that?

That indeed was the one, the only, the inimitable, Dave's childhood hero, Doctor Demento on the mic at the reception.

The explanation is pretty simple. Phoebe has known the good Doctor her whole life, although she usually just calls him Uncle Barry. Barry and his terrific wife Sue made the long trip out from California to be part of our special day. The fact that Dr. Demento came too made it all that more special.

Pretty darn cool!
The B-Squad
November 28, 2005, 11:19:56 AM by Dave

What was with the bee pins? Who were those guys? Is your softball team really as bad as they say?

Ah, the B-Squad (get it? Bees). A finer collection of fellows you’d be hard pressed to find. Originally we were known as Bricker’s B-Squad, but in recent years Brick has quietly taken his name off the team. You remember the Bricker, don’t you?

Generous to a fault, the B-Squad. You can thank them for all the tasty drinks at the wedding. That’s right. All the drinks.

Really that bad? I don’t know, judge for yourself. Our record over the last five years is 0-n, where n represents all games played. And that’s in E-League, Minneapolis’s lowest, most “recreational’ league.

Follow our exploits each summer here.
The Website
November 28, 2005, 11:15:31 AM by Dave

What a great website!

Well, that’s more of statement, or even an exclamation, than a question, but it is something we hear a lot. All credit goes to the amazing Bill Paarmann.

Wait, haven’t I heard that name before?

Indeed you have. In addition to being the Best Man and playing a trombone solo for the recessional, Bill found time to set up and maintain this incredible website.

Thanks, Bill!

Are you going to keep it up?

We think so. We’re thinking about converting it into more of a “What are Phoebe and Dave up to?” kind of thing, but we’ll see how it goes. You can always check back to see.
